The Contemporary Art in Kenya project started as a juried artists’ competition and resulted in the production of an exhibition, a book, a CD-ROM and a website.
For the website, it was important that the website could also particularly be used by users in Africa, who most often depend on very slow connections.
The exhibition was taking place in 2006, the book was launched in 2007 and the CD-ROM and website in 2008. The whole project gives in various media an overview of the Contemporary Art scene in Kenya during the first decade of the new Millennium.
The juried competition was launched in December 2005 and entries closed on 31st January 2006. 450 submissions were received on close of deadline, representing the work of over 180 artists. Out of the submissions, the jury selected 112 artworks by 80 artists in the categories paintings, sculptures and mixed media art. The Alliance Française de Nairobi and the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi selected additionally 10 artworks for the Symbolink category.
The book & CD-ROM are still available for purchase, contact me if you want to order!
